Explorer Post #2421

The Denison Volunteer Fire Department has recently established, in cooperation with the Boy Scouts of America, an opportunity for young adults in the Denison area to experience life as a firefighter. The post enables the members to train and work along side the firefighters. After an orientation period the Explorers are allowed to respond to emergencies and assist the firefighters with their duties. The members meet at a minimum of twice monthly for training and business meetings. Some of their training topics include: vehicular rescue, truck pumping, water application, hazardous materials, first aid, equipment apparatus operation, basic fire science, Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), search and rescue, weather spotting, disaster response, among others. The post is run by the youth members with fire department members as advisors. The Explorers are not allowed to enter burning structures, substitute for regular firefighters, or other activities that would put them in peril. The post currently has nine youth members and eight adult advisors. The post takes on new members in the fall of each year. Membership is based on good moral character, a strong desire to assist the post, and being academically sound.
